Getting Started
Options
IAW Pro has a few options that you will find useful under a number of circumstances.
- Country
IAW Pro can localize search results from the Google, Yahoo, MSN, News and News Archives indexes.
The currently supported countries are USA, UK, Canada and Australia. So if you need to get results
only from sites in a different supported country, use this option. The default is USA.
- Store My Login Info
If you want IAW Pro to save your login information from one session to the next, click this option.
You will be prompted for your username and password, and from that point on it will be saved.
Keep in mind that this information is saved in an unencrypted settings.xml file, and so is not
recommended for shared computers.
- Font Size
If you find the default font size for IAW Pro too hard to read, then you can make the
font size larger. There are three options: small, medium and large. Small is the default.
- Bypass Firewall
If you find that, no matter what keywords you use, you're not getting any search results back,
try selecting this option. It will use an alternate method of gathering search results that
will bypass any firewall settings you may have. It should also work for computers using
proxies.
- Remove Used Research
If you would like any information that you add to the research text box removed from the
results (to help you avoid duplicating information you've already used), select this option.
Loose Matching
By default, IAW Pro is very particular about the quality of the research it brings back. Its
algorithm is designed to fetch only the best, most related information. However, some niches
are very small, and so the amount of information is limited.
If you find that you are not getting back enough research for your keywords, try checking the
'Loose Matching' checkbox underneath the Research button. It will loosen up the restrictions
that IAW Pro's algorithm imposes, and most often will return much more information.
Subtopic Icons
IAW Pro will sometimes add icons to the left of a subtopic in the subtopic list. The explanation
of what these icons mean follows:
- The plus (+) sign icon.
The plus sign icon will sometimes appear if you perform searches on two or more different
indexes. What it means is that IAW Pro found the same (or related) subtopic in both searches, and
has merged them together so all of the research is under one subtopic entry. This makes
it easier to see everything that has been collected for a given subtopic, no matter how
many searches you perform.
- The check mark icon.
The check mark icon will appear whenever you perform more than one search and IAW Pro
finds new subtopics in the new search that were not in any previous searches. This
makes it easy to spot new information immediately after performing another search.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- IAW Pro always tells me that it can't find any results, no matter what keywords I use.
Try selecting the Bypass Firewall option, and repeating your search.
- I'm getting back some research, but not enough.
First, make sure that you're using the best keywords for searches. Keywords that make sense
at the beginning of a sentence are best. For example, instead of searching for "Canon PowerShot A520"
(a type of digital camera), search for "The Canon PowerShot A520" -- because the phrase would
only appear at the beginning of a sentence with the word "The" in front.
Also, if your keywords already make sense at the beginning of a sentence, try adding "is" or "are"
after the keywords. For example, instead of searching for "kitchen cabinets", try searching for
"kitchen cabinets are". Adding "is" or "are" tends to get rid of the most commercial results
that have little information.
Finally, if that does not work, try checking the "Loose Matching" checkbox and repeating your search.
